The Royal Institute of Navigation was formed in 1947, granted Royal recognition in 1972 and incorporated by Royal Charter in 2006. Our charitable aims have always been:
To unite in one body those interested in navigationTo advance the art, science and practice of navigationTo promote knowledge in navigation and its associated sciences, including positioning, timing, tracking and conduct of a journey, whether on, in, over or under land, sea, air or space We meet these objectives through the running of targeted events and international conferences which focus on the hot issues and leading activity in the navigation industry; the publication of the world-renowned Journal of Navigation and the popular bimonthly magazine Navigation News; and the running of competitions to promote navigation in all areas. With our wide range of Special Interest Groups and Regional Branches running a variety of events, we aim to keep our members at the forefront of navigation debate.
We work closely with international bodies including the International Association of Institutes of Navigation (IAIN), the European Group of Institutes of Navigation (EUGIN), the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to determine policy and best practice in the world of navigation. We also house the Cundall Library of Navigation – the UK’s leading navigation-specific library of books and resources – which is open to the public, and from which Members can borrow.
